Why Regular Piano Tuning Is So Important
Many piano owners mistakenly believe they only need tuning when the piano sounds noticeably out of tune.
In reality, tuning is preventative maintenance.
Every piano is constantly changing.
Each string is under approximately 160–200 pounds of tension, creating over 20 tons of total pressure across the frame.
Colorado’s climate accelerates changes inside the instrument.
Seasonal humidity changes
Dry winters and mild summers affect:
- Soundboard movement
- Pinblock stability
- Bridge pressure
- Action regulation
- Overall tuning stability
Temperature fluctuations
Mountain weather changes rapidly.
Even climate-controlled homes experience enough seasonal variation to impact tuning.
Daily use
Every note played gradually changes string tension.
The more frequently your piano is played, the more often tuning becomes necessary.
Most manufacturers recommend tuning every six to twelve months.
Protect Your Investment
A quality piano is one of the largest musical investments many families ever make.
Some instruments are worth several thousand dollars.
Others become priceless family heirlooms.
Routine tuning helps protect:
- Tone quality
- Pitch accuracy
- Keyboard responsiveness
- Internal structure
- Long-term value
Skipping regular maintenance can eventually require costly repairs or pitch raises that could have been avoided.
